Recent Drawings
Time spent in gardens and studying plants has meant that putting pen on paper to capture the intricate shapes and textures of the plants I am looking at felt like a natural development.
Drawing allows me to slow down and truly observe the intricate details of plants. I hope to capture these elements and preserve the fleeting beauty of nature in my work. The drawing process is a meditative practice, time seems to pause, and the simple act of looking takes precedence.
Theses drawings are of flowers and plants collected on walks, seen in the garden or species I simply love the shape and structure of and want to learn more about. As I continue my drawing practice, I am really looking forward to adding more pieces to my collection and exploring new ways to interpret the natural landscape around me.
I hope they resonate and connect with you and you enjoy exploring this new collection.
Beautiful moments from the past week
The garden is growing and changing constantly, with new buds appearing each week.
I would like to readjust and add more July flowering plants into our garden for next Summer. I am conscious that once our Rambling Rose’s petals were washed away in heavy rain and wind, the garden was predominately green with very little flowers to marvel at. Luckily we have a pot of Cosmos and Dahlia’s close to the house which has slightly made up for this, but the rest of the garden needs a little more Summer vibrancy. Ideas for new planting for next summer include Penstemon, Phlomis, Verbena, Achillea and Phlox. Despite a lack of abundance of flowers, our hard working scabious, flowering carrot and cosmos have continued to fill vases to enjoy inside which has been a delight.
Ru and I spent a recent Sunday cutting back our Rambling Rose, hoping for a rejuvenated display next June, it was hard to see the results of the Rose cut back so hard but we both know it is for the best. The plants trained to cover our brick wall are a Rose, Wisteria, a Potato vine and a Jasmin which all had a big cut back and tidy, leaving a mound of cuttings that covered our lawn!
We are now in the early days of August. It has been thundery and rained heavily last night, giving the plants much needed water after a hot spell at the end of July. The Rowan trees are full of red berries, brightening up the local woodland with pops of deep red throughout the green trees canopies. I love this time of year when the days are still long and the garden and allotment is full of produce.
Drawing, gardening and working on my design course have been keeping me busy in recent days and I submitted my first assignment on my Design course today which is an exciting step. Looking forward to the next project already. Hope you are having a lovely Summer so far, Liza x
