About

Liza Mackintosh is a multifaceted artist, who divides her time between creating artwork and designing gardens from her East Sussex studio.

Liza’s art practice revolves around capturing the quiet, minute details of the forms, textures and silhouettes she observes in the natural world and landscape around her. Her drawings are a poetic investigation; with discovery being realised through the process of drawing. Liza’s work feels quiet, tactical and contemplative, bringing us in tune with the rhythm and fragility she observes through drawing. Walking in the landscape and gardening provide ample material and inspiration to ignite her drawing practice.

Alongside her drawings, Liza creates atmospheric abstract landscape paintings. Liza’s paintings emerge from the same attentive observation that underpins her drawing practice but are ignited from memory and experience. Liza’s paintings translate her observations into expansive, atmospheric landscapes. Form is softened and distilled through paint into gestures of light, movement and colour, aspiring to capture not the description of a place, but the feeling of being within it.

Liza applies her artistic knowledge to the way she composes garden designs. In 2022, Liza began gardening, initiating a new understanding of the botanical world that has long inspired her artwork. Following her curiosity, Liza completed an RHS level two in practical horticulture at Hever castle followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design. Liza now creates thoughtfully designed gardens and planting schemes that reflect her understanding of the use of colour, form and composition to create an atmosphere within a garden. Her experience as a draughtswoman and painter give her a creative outlook that deeply influences her garden design process.

Liza is available to discuss her artwork, whether you have your eye on a particular artwork or would like a commissioned piece created for a particular space. If you would like to discuss Garden Design, Liza would be delighted to help you reimagine your current layout or create a new garden for you to cherish.
